Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an intern at an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
